6 Music sets the tone of the dining experience

I hate flickering lights (when the fluorescent tube is dying). They annoy me. I rather work and dine in darkness than to have my senses and peripheral vision held hostage by flickering lights. I get so agitated, I feel like I’m gonna get a seizure or something.

Second to that is bad music… hmmm… but “bad” is subjective so let’s call it inappropriate music. The seizure like feeling hits me when I am dining in a quaint Thai restaurant and they are playing Malay rock music. Having said that, the feeling is the same when I’m dining in a Japanese restaurant and they play something from Placido Domingo or Il Divo. The music is not appropriate and does not go with the ambience and mood of the meal. Why do the restaurant managers allow it? I assume because the staff and restaurateurs appreciate a particular genre of music and they forget that while the restaurant is their workplace/office… the music is not for them, it is for the patrons. Having said that, while my point is about playing appropriate music… I don’t believe every restaurant needs music. Some can do perfectly fine without any background droning.

So I’d say for most cases… keep it simple. If you serve Japanese… play some Japanese music… Thai… Thai music. Ahhh… but I do say in most cases… because when it comes to unique concept restaurants like Hakka Republic @ Menara Hup Seng… I really don’t know what works. The whole place echoes with Asian influence… but they serve western food. *scratches head*

One thing is for sure, don’t hire these guys to handle your music! All your customers will run away!

Wow… if that were possible… and I had that magical tune… I’m sure I’d make tonnes of money “leasing” the music.
