A couple of days ago, I had the pleasure of dining with one of the coolest chefs I have ever met. Hmmm… having said that, it is not like I have a whole lot of chef friends on my speed dial. None for that matter. I won’t mention his name because of late many have been singing praises about him and his food… and I don’t want his head to swell up and explode. I like his food way too much… to lose him to some silly medical condition like an enlarged head.
Let me tell you why I think he is cool. He is not pretentious and doesn’t put up a phony big-time-chef facade. When asked what his all time food/dish/meal was… his answer was ice-cream. Someone on the table then asked him what ice-cream he enjoyed the most or what we are likely to find in his freezer at home. His answer was Streets by Wall’s… an answer I would have never imagined I’d hear from such an accomplished chef. He explained that he liked the iciness and texture of it (something I personally avoid when eating ice-cream). I was totally blown away by his answer because I had expected for him to name a sophisticated brand like Häagen-Dazs or at very least Baskin-Robbins or Ben & Jerry’s. What an honest answer! We kept shooting him questions during lunch and he remained casual and relaxed with his answers.
I think these days; we as a society get so caught up keeping up with Joneses, we forget what we really enjoy. We try hard to find pleasure in activities which are hip and trendy that we think we “should” be enjoying. Maybe some of the time, we really do learn how to appreciate it too… but that’s beside the point. The point is dropping that facade and being true to your needs and wants… something I am occasionally guilty of not practicing myself.
For quite a while now, the only type of live music I have been listening to is Jazz music. I enjoy it too! I am guilty of not listening to much live pop-rock music because it seems a little passé to me. This brings me to Hyperzone, the band that is currently playing at Uncle Chilli’s, Hilton PJ. Thanks to the team at ZestPJ.com, I recently was invited to see Hyperzone perform at Uncle Chilli’s. It was their second night back on the stage and they put on a great show for all their regulars. This time round, they have added spice to their outfit… or more precisely G, a member of Manila Spice (the previous band) has joined them. They have good sound and amazing energy. I was so wrong about live pop-rock being passé. I had so much fun with my colleagues! The beats were pumping the whole night and that just put everyone in the mood to drink! I’m definitely going back! Heheheh.
Here are some photos from the evening:
